After weeks of rumors, the chairman and CEO of WWE is scheduled to announce that he will be starting a new league to compete with the NFL, according to multiple media reports. McMahon's company, Alpha Entertainment, said that he would have a “major sports announcement” on Thursday afternoon.
The founder of the floundering XFL, which lasted just one season in 2001, McMahon has been mum about his intentions for a potential new league. Details of how his league would differ from the NFL and other professional leagues have not been released, though more is expected to be cleared at his 3 p.m. news conferance, which will stream live on social media.
Last month, McMahon sold more than $100 million in WWE stock to fund a potential league, which will reportedly have an eye toward kicking off in 2020. McMahon’s second foray into the ranks of professional football come as television ratings for the once-dominant NFL continue to slide.
